Lessons and Carols: A Journey Through Scripture, Song, and Reflection

Writer's picture: Nic PattersonNic Patterson

The Christmas season invites us to pause, reflect, and celebrate the profound gift of Emmanuel—God with us. This morning at The Village Church, we are honored to present a Service of Lessons and Carols, a beloved tradition that brings the story of Christ’s birth to life through Scripture and song.

This service offers a journey through God’s promises, from the foretelling of the Messiah to the joyful proclamation of His birth. One Scripture and song at a time, we will reflect on the miracle of Christmas. Alongside timeless carols, our service features solos, a medley, and selections from Joseph Martin’s beautiful cantata, The Winter Rose. This moving work intertwines traditional carols with new compositions, weaving together the life of Christ with profound musical and narrative depth. We will be presenting the entire cantata with orchestra during Advent 2025.

A Musical Offering

In addition to the voices of our choir, soloists, and pastors, this morning’s service will be enriched by the artistry of talented instrumentalists. Jonathan Lindsay will add the lyrical warmth of the violin, and Jodi Liphart will bring the ethereal tones of the harp, enhancing the beauty of this sacred celebration. Their contributions will elevate the service, making it a memorable experience for all who join us.

The Tradition of Lessons and Carols

Originating at King’s College, Cambridge, the Service of Lessons and Carols has become a cherished way for congregations worldwide to reflect on the Christmas story. While it may have been celebrated at The Village Church in years past, this year marks an opportunity for us to embrace it anew as a community.

This service is more than a collection of carols and readings—it is a shared act of worship. Each Scripture lesson connects us to God’s promises, and each hymn or anthem allows us to respond in gratitude and awe. Together, these elements form a sacred tapestry, drawing us closer to the wonder of Christ’s birth.

An Invitation to Worship

As we gather this morning, let the music and message of the Lessons and Carols service remind us of the hope and joy found in Christ. Whether it’s the hauntingly beautiful strains of The Winter Rose, the familiar words of "O Holy Night," or the stirring harmonies of the choir, may these moments lead you deeper into the story of Christmas.

We are grateful to share this time of worship with you and invite you to join us in this special celebration of faith, music, and community.

Join us on December 8 at The Village Church as we embrace the timeless tradition of Lessons and Carols, featuring scripture, song, choir, and the beauty of instrumental music. Together, let us reflect on the story of God’s love and the miracle of Christmas.
